Airport Extreme

Just got myself an Airport Extreme Wifi box, to replace my increasingly unreliable Linksys one.

The setup was amazing, with most routers etc…, you are stuck trying to find a web page and finding what the default password is, and the Linksys one barely worked anyway. The Airport Extreme is a different class, it’s setup using the ‘Airport Utility’, and it took me a few minutes to get it up and running. So far it’s been faultless, connecting very well to my Mac upstairs, where the Linksys would never get full signal.

Another issue with the Linksys is that the WEP auth didn’t really work, you’d type in the password and nothing would happen, the Mac would try to connect, but just couldn’t. So I had to turn off WEP and use MAC address lockdown, which was a pain when I added a device, or a visitor wanted to get on the LAN. Needless to say, the Airport Extreme solved this instantly, WEP works 100%.

It’s expensive (£140), but within about 5 minutes I’d replace an unreliable Wifi network with a perfect, stable, secure one.

As another test, I got my Blackberry using it in less than a minute, the Linksys could, but because of the MAC address lockdown, after it lost all it’s settings one time (it did from time to time), I couldn’t be bothered inputting the MAC address again.

The Airport Extreme is awesome product, does what it needs to do with no fuss, I wish I’d got one earlier, and save myself the frustration.

Also : The Apple Store delivered it within 2 days, exactly when the email said they would, outstanding.
