Kindle books outsell real ones on Amazon

Amazon has just announced that they sell more Kindle eBooks than they do regular paper books. I think this is a pretty amazing success for Amazon, I don’t think anyone would have predicted that this would happen so quickly, I just hope it leads to a broader range of books on the Kindle.

Even more importantly though, it lowers the barrier the entry for authors, if, for example, I wanted to publish my memoirs,  ”Teetering on the Edge of Greatness” (that’s a joke BTW), I can do so with zero risk, I don’t have to print books, ship them to various locations around the world and hope they sell enough for me to make some money.

With the Kindle, I can even self publish, much like the iTunes App Store, I think for unknown authors writing a first novel, this is wonderful, maybe we’ll start to see original works appearing, or books with a very niche appeal, which can be published, make a profit on a very small number of sales.

Just as the App Store has let small companies outsell much bigger rivals, maybe the Kindle Store will do the same. I really hope it does.
